dark ambient
what it is
dark ambient is atmospheric electronic music built around shadowy, foreboding textures and deep drones. it creates immersive soundscapes that feel cinematic, unsettling, or meditative, often used in games, film, and headphone listening.
what it sounds like
slow moving layers of synth drones, field recordings, distant rumbles, and grainy textures that feel vast and eerie. it's less about melody and more about mood, like standing alone in a cathedral or walking through fog at night.
where it came from
it grew out of 1980s industrial music and ambient experiments by artists like brian eno, coil, and lustmord, blending synthesizers, samples, and noise into something darker than traditional ambient. labels like projekt helped shape its moody, introspective side in the 1990s.
