doom metal
what it is
doom metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal built on slow tempos, low-tuned guitars, and a crushing heaviness meant to evoke dread, despair, or impending doom. it emerged in the 1980s as bands took the darkest impulses of early Black Sabbath and pushed them further.
what it sounds like
glacially slow riffs, guitars tuned way down for maximum weight, vocals that range from mournful cleans to guttural growls. the atmosphere is thick and oppressive, like being buried under layers of distortion and reverb, with every note stretched out until it aches.
where it came from
doom metal traces directly back to Black Sabbath's early 1970s work, especially the downtuned heaviness of Master of Reality. bands like Candlemass, Electric Wizard, and Cathedral built on that foundation through the 1980s and beyond, creating a sound where slow doesn't mean soft, it means suffocating.
