slowcore
what it is
slowcore is a subgenre of alternative rock where everything moves at a crawl, built on minimal arrangements and often melancholic, introspective lyrics. it emerged in the late 1980s and 90s as artists stripped indie rock down to its quietest, most spacious form.
what it sounds like
guitars shimmer or drone at glacial tempos, drums hit like distant echoes, and vocals float detached and hushed over sparse arrangements. the mood is contemplative and heavy, with long stretches of near silence punctuated by occasional swells of sound.
where it came from
it grew out of the late 80s indie scene, drawing inspiration from the stark acoustic work of Nick Drake and the cold minimalism of The Velvet Underground. bands like Galaxie 500, American Music Club, and Codeine pioneered the sound in the early 90s, with the genre seeing renewed interest in the 2020s through artists like Duster.
